CHINESE OPEN 2014, YEAR OF THE HORSE – A week-long art event in a car park, in the middle of Chinatown, Soho, deepest London.
It all opens on Sunday February 2nd, while all around, the Chinatown community, and everyone else, celebrates the Chinese New Year. The underground car park will be closed to all besides pedestrians for the day due to all the traffic restrictions and road closures around Chinatown while dragons, horses and more dance in the streets.
Artist and curator Vanya Balogh and his group of collaborators, the same group that brought you the Big Deal No.5 art show (in a different car park, adjacent to the all together more sterile Frieze Art Fair) late last year, have taken the opportunity to make use of the Chinatown car park and the celebrations, to put on another event..
The Chinese Open is art show, a genuine event, an exciting event, the Open took place last year as a one day event, in the same car park you’ll find it in this year.
“The response was great, so we’re producing another event in the same place, except this time the event will go on a little longer”.
The show will open on levels one and seven of the underground car park. The show will then remain on level seven for a longer period, level seven goes on for seven days until 9th February – that’s one day on level one, seven days down underground on level seven – a week-long event for the start of the year of the horse.
“It was designed to post an imaginary idea of beginning of the new calendar year in a creative way” says curator Vanya “and our sponsor on this occasion is Geoffrey Leong, Patron Saint Of London. One would expect quite a vibrant setting for works in all media, we have left it to artists to conjure a piece for this occasion, and lets put it this way this is an underground show, no mucking about”
The show opens at Midday on Sunday the 2nd February and runs through the afternoon until 6pm, The show then goes on until February 9th. Q-Park Chinatown is a newly refurbished underground car park in the heart of Chinatown. You find it at 20 Newport Place, London, WC2H 7PR
There’s a massive list of participating artists, see the Facebook event for more details and a long long list of artists…
The show is open Monday 3rd Feb to 9th Feb >>> 12 noon until 6pm
